TIJ Publication Ethics Statement

The responsibilities of the editors are as follows:

  • Decide which manuscripts should be published, guided by journal policies, aims and scope;
  • Provide guidance to authors, reviewers and guest editors of the requirements of the peer review process and all relevant journal policies, procedures and guidelines;
  • Provide editorial board members with all relevant information, and keep them updated of any changes to policies, procedures or other developments;
  • Inform authors of decisions and feedback in a timely manner;
  • Evaluate manuscripts based on their practice-related merit, clarity, originality, and potential for contribution within the journal’s aims and scope;
  • Make all reasonable efforts to provide a publishing context that respects diversity and supports inclusivity, and that aligns with feminist principles. This includes, but is not limited to, the selection of editorial board members, reviewers, authors, guest editors and journal content;
  • Actively promote and support the journal’s commitment to inclusive practices that celebrate and encourage diverse contributions, and to providing a medium for authors who represent communities, voices, experiences and perspectives that are not often visible in published form;
  • Exercise sensitivity if publishing images or other content of cultural or other significance. Engage in consultation processes where appropriate;
  • Ensure that appropriate reviewers are selected who are sufficiently knowledgeable about the focus of the manuscript, who can collectively offer a range of responses from different perspectives, and who do not have a substantive conflict of interest in relation to the manuscript;
  • Develop and maintain a list of suitable reviewers with a diversity of knowledge and backgrounds, and keep the list updated according to each reviewer’s satisfactory engagement with the review process;
  • Champion freedom of expression by reviewers and not seek to influence their opinions about a submitted manuscript prior to review;
  • Treat manuscripts as confidential documents share or discuss their content only with appropriate reviewers and editorial board members prior to publishing;
  • Do not share privileged information or ideas derived from unpublished manuscripts for research, teaching, publication, presentations or other personal advantage without the express written consent of the author;
  • Respond reasonably and swiftly if substantiated ethical complaints are presented in relation to a manuscript or allegation of misconduct;
  • Share the evaluation reports with the reviewers, if appropriate.
  • Publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies promptly and visibly.

The editorial board’s responsibilities are as follows:

  • Respond promptly to requests for reviews and follow the ethical guidelines for reviewers;
  • Provide advice to the editor-in-chief on whether documents should be published and give reasons;
  • Treat manuscripts as confidential documents, do not share or discuss their content except with appropriate reviewers and editorial board members prior to publishing;
  • Respond to other requests from the editor-in-chief;
  • Respond reasonably and swiftly if substantiated ethical complaints are presented in relation to a manuscript or allegation of misconduct;

The reviewers’ responsibilities are as follows:

  • Respond promptly to requests to review, and decline those they feel unable or unqualified to review, or where they foresee what could be construed as a substantive conflict of interest;
  • Review manuscripts with a view to legitimate expansion of practice knowledge and encouragement of academic discussion, credible practice innovation or development, and creative ideas;
  • Give appropriate consideration of the cultural contexts and other forms of diversity that have shaped the work and ideas described in the manuscript;
  • Express their view of the manuscript clearly to the editor, with supporting statements in terms that they are willing to have shared with the submitting author;
  • Provide valid feedback that recognises the work of the author(s) and celebrates what has been achieved, gives clear direction in relation to recommendations, offers encouragement where significant modification is required prior to publication and/or provides respectful explanation of recommendation to decline the opportunity to publish on this occasion;
  • Provide advice to the editor-in-chief on whether documents should be published and give reasons;
  • Delete or destroy copies of reviewed manuscripts.

Authors’ responsibilities are as follows:

  • The submitted manuscript must be original (not previously published) and provide an accurate description of practice and/or account of events or ideas, in accordance with the aims and scope of the journal;
  • Identical manuscripts, or those describing essentially the same work, must not be submitted to more than one journal concurrently. Re-publishing of articles by the author is welcomed after the end of the journal’s subscription year;
  • Appropriate acknowledgement must be given within the manuscript of the work, ideas and/or words of others, including those that have been influential in shaping the work or ideas reported in the manuscript;
  • All named authors must have made a significant contribution to the work or ideas described in the manuscript. Everyone who made significant contribution should be listed as a co-author, and all co-authors must have approved the final version of the paper and agreed to its submission for publication;
  • All permissions, consents and ethical approvals pertaining to the work must have been granted prior to submission of the manuscript;
  • When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor and to cooperate with a retraction of, or correction to, the paper;
  • Disclosure of any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed as having unfairly influenced the author’s interpretation or description of work or events should be included in the submission.

Guest editor responsibilities are as follows:

  • Work within the agreed subject matter of a thematic issue;
  • Collaborate with the editorial board to ensure all contributors have been clearly informed of the topic and extent of their contribution in relation to the design of the whole issue;
  • Collaborating with editorial board to ensure an appropriate review process for each article;
  • Writing a relevant introduction to the issue.

Dealing with unethical conduct:

In the event that unethical conduct by any author or member of the editorial team is drawn to the attention of any member of the editorial team, this information should be made known to the Editor-in-Chief. The E-I-C shall then:

  • Assess the seriousness of the accusation;
  • Make it known to the person accused and seek that person’s perspective;
  • Seek the perspective of the person making the accusation;
  • Determine an approach to dealing with it, appropriate to the issue and the seriousness;
  • Make the approach known to the parties involved and seek their responses and recommendations;
  • Make an assessment and determine a resolution;
  • Make a decision about how to respond;
  • If the editor-in-chief is the subject of the complaint, the E-I-C shall appoint a suitable member of the Editorial Board (preferably) or a suitable outside person to handle this process.
